We had no idea it was going to amount to what it did. The idea came from a facebook post (Kingman High School USD 331, out of Kansas, on November 20th) that was shared to me. I took that idea and thought about a way that we could help with our food backpack program for some of our district's at-risk students and families. I brainstormed with some colleagues and took the idea to Dr. Lebo. She thought it would be a great way to raise awareness and help generate some food for those in need over the holiday break.
So the mission was set, students needed to block their first period classroom's door with food. Not just canned goods, but food that they themselves would like to eat. Cereal, mac n' cheese, granola bars, popcorn, soups, etc. They had 15 minutes to stack their doors in the morning and if they accomplished their goal, then their first period class was canceled and they got cookies and cocoa in the commons.
To say that it was successful would be an understatement. The students gave without hesitation and it will have a profound impact that I don't even think that they can fathom.
As of right now, we have not had time to count, but I am guessing there are over 1000 food items donated from grades 5th-8th (around 240 students). It was so successful that we will not only be able to provide for families in our district (we are extending the amount of food boxes and backpack food items that we send home with families), but we will also be able to donate a lot of food to local organizations. It has also inspired our staff to possibly challenge the High-School to see if they can match our donation.
This may have been the first Spartans Blocking Hunger, but it most certainly wont be the last.
*UPDATE- We raised 1435 Items!
